Forest Schools
Forest schools is an innovative approach to outdoor play and learning with an emphasis on fun, freedom, play, teamwork, building confidence, mind fullness and making friends. It aims to provide all children with opportunities to achieve, and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning experiences in a woodland environment. Children participate in a range of activities including den building, rope swings, knife and wood skills, fire lighting and camp cooking. Children are taught to manage personal risks and often develop the confidence to work independently and with their peers.
At Highwoods Community Primary School, every year, all children from Reception to Year 6 participate in Forest Schools. Children in KS2 access activities on a site at Highwoods Country Park. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 access Forest School in one of the two purpose built forest schools areas within the school grounds.
